This Saturday at Little Flea: Featured Vendors

Another great edition of Little Flea awaits us this weekend -- rain or shine! As always, we've assembled a top-notch group of vendors bringing you enough quality and quantity to dig into for awhile. Here's a sneak peak at who and what's coming this Saturday.

Barker Bell is determined to save the world, one craft at a time, by creating unique repurposed and upycled handmade goods. "Viewing the world through brass goggles with upcycled lenses offers me a unique perspective that helps others see the potential beauty in their trash. A bit like a time-travelling Dr. Frankenfurter, I create steampunk, mixed media, and collage pieces with a unique twist that are reflective of my sometimes warped and twisted view of the world."

Recently launched Verdure Magazine is dedicated to sustainability and community in Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania. Come meet the folks behind the magazine and pick up a copy ($1) of issue one, which has a special focus on green initiatives and businesses in Lawrenceville.

New to the market: Upcycle Fiber Arts. Beth Ketterer's imaginative work utilizes recycled and discarded items turning them into unique and innovative art, decor and fashion accessories.

Ken Roberts (an '09 pioneer Little Flea vendor) will once again share his awesome African-American photo collection and his deep knowledge of the subject. Stop by, have a chat, and take home a bit of history.

Kali Gonzalez from Vehement Romantic makes her debut at Little Flea this Saturday. Most of her work is related to nature in one way or another, often consisting of leaf skeletons, twigs, feathers, moss, and usually created with recycled materials.

There's lots more: household goods, collectibles, art, organic body care, and ethnic food. Music at the Cultural Corner will begin at noon. See you Saturday.

2 p.m. - Jim Hart
With over 30 years of song writing and performance experience, Jim Hart draws from gospel, country, rock, and blues influences. His favorite song is the one he just heard this morning.

Jim performs as a solo artist, and/or with a band. Jim also can be found every Sunday morning leading a modern worship service at Kiski Valley Assembly of God in Leechburg, PA.

Here’s what others say about Jim:

"He does it all with commitment, enthusiasm and a light-hearted touch. Ask him if he is a songwriter, and he replies, 'Unfortunately.' He just as quickly can turn serious in his original repertoire with musings on dealing with regret and hard times, and summoning the strength to just hold on."

- Valley News Dispatch

“As a promoter of the arts, I provide an intimate atmosphere with no background noise or distraction. Solo performers under these circumstances must be skilled, professional, and comfortable with their audience. Each time Jim Hart performed for us we were rewarded with an evening of strong melodies and thought-provoking lyrics covering a variety of images and emotions. With an expansive repertoire to pull from, his relaxed and friendly demeanor, Jim easily connected with our mixed audience of fellow musicians, acoustic aficionados and those who were completely new to the songwriters’ venue.“

- Annette Dietz, Promoter/Artist

Stormy Weather: Little Flea Canceled for Saturday, April 17

Blame it on the (chance of) rain, the cold, and the wind. No choice but to postpone flea affairs until next week.

But don't be discouraged, the annual Lawrenceville Blossom Tour takes place this weekend, so we encourage everyone to keep Lawrenceville in your plans.

See you next week!

This Saturday at Little Flea: Featured Vendors

Another great edition of Little Flea awaits us this weekend. We've assembled a top-notch group of vendors bringing you enough quality and quantity to dig into for awhile. Here's a sneak peak at who and what's coming this Saturday.

Tugboat Printshop (above) returns for the second week in a row with their original, handmade prints. You can't miss this great opportunity to check out and get your hands on some of the remarkable work of this Lawrenceville-based dynamic duo.

Crafter Shirley McCormick will be on hand with her eco bags made of repurposed fabrics.

Stop by Chris and Nat for funky home decor items and quality household goods in need of a new home. (Need some signage? Chris and Nat are the force behind SignWorks, responsible for most of the awesome signs on Lawrenceville storefronts.)

You will find great deals on fabric and accessories at the T's Upholstery Studio table. Let Brooke (pictured), Marianne, or owner Cindy answer your decor questions -- and be sure to stop by the shop a couple of doors down at 3611 Butler St.

This weekend also coincides with a popular Lawrenceville spring event -- the Blossom Tour. Temps will be more spring-like, a bit colder than what we'd gotten used to, but thankfully no rain. And that's worth underscoring, being an outdoor market and all. No matter, we know nothing will stop you from hanging out in Lawrenceville, no matter what the conditions. See you Saturday!

2 p.m. - Sean O'Donnell
Seán O’Donnell, a Pittsburgh-area native, started playing the bagpipes at age 7, and his obsession with music spread from there. After learning his first guitar chords from his father, he began spending unhealthy amounts of time making layered, two-track recordings on his parents’ multi-deck cassette player.

Today, his original recordings combine a DIY ethic and influences spanning decades and genres, but can be vaguely pinned down in the psych-folk vein. In his live performances, Seán trades in whistles and bells for passionate vocals and a distortion pedal. Imagine the Clancy Brothers covering the Violent Femmes, and you’ll start to get the picture.
